Physical Education at Thringstone

At Thringstone Primary School, we believe physical education is about far more than sport. It helps children develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and a lifelong enjoyment of being active.

Our PE curriculum reflects our curriculum drivers of Aspiration and Communication. We encourage children to challenge themselves, support others and develop the confidence to achieve their personal best, while learning the importance of cooperation, leadership and respect.

Through a broad and balanced curriculum, every child develops the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.

How We Teach PE

Children receive two hours of high-quality PE each week, with learning carefully sequenced from Reception through to Year 6.

Our curriculum develops children's skills across a wide range of activities, including:

  • Fundamental Movement Skills
  • Games
  • Gymnastics
  • Dance
  • Athletics
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Swimming

Lessons focus on developing physical competence alongside teamwork, communication, resilience and good sportsmanship.

Learning Across the School

Our curriculum builds progressively, allowing children to revisit and strengthen key skills each year.

Early Years

Children develop the fundamental movement skills that underpin future sporting success, including balance, coordination, agility and movement. They experience dance, gymnastics, games and athletics through active, practical learning.

Key Stage 1

Children continue to develop agility, balance and coordination while learning the skills needed for invasion games, striking and fielding, net and wall games, dance, gymnastics and athletics. They begin to work collaboratively, follow rules and apply simple tactics in games.

Key Stage 2

As children progress through the school, they experience an increasingly wide range of sports including football, hockey, basketball, tag rugby, tennis, cricket, rounders, athletics, gymnastics, dance and outdoor adventurous activities. Swimming is taught as part of the Key Stage 2 curriculum, ensuring children develop this essential life skill.

Sport Beyond the Curriculum

Physical activity is an important part of everyday life at Thringstone.

Children have opportunities to:

  • represent the school in competitive sports
  • take part in local festivals and competitions
  • join a range of after-school sports clubs
  • participate in active lunchtimes
  • enjoy outdoor learning experiences
  • use our Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) throughout the school day.

Working closely with the North West Leicestershire School Sport Partnership and our local school partnerships provides children with a wide range of sporting experiences throughout the year.

Celebrating Sport

We are proud to provide opportunities for every child to succeed in sport, whatever their starting point.

Whether competing for their house, representing the school, learning a new activity or simply becoming more confident and active, we celebrate effort, teamwork and personal achievement. Sport plays an important role in developing children's confidence, resilience and wellbeing, supporting them both inside and outside the classroom.

Sports Leaders & Play Coaches

Leadership is an important part of physical education at Thringstone.

Our Sports Leaders and Play Coaches help organise activities, support younger children at playtimes and encourage active lifestyles across the school. These roles develop leadership, communication and teamwork while helping create positive, active playtimes for everyone.
