Art at Thringstone

At Thringstone Primary School, we want every child to develop creativity, curiosity and confidence through art.

Our Art & Design curriculum reflects our curriculum drivers of Culture and Aspiration. Children explore the work of artists, designers and craftspeople from different times and cultures while developing the confidence to express their own ideas and take pride in their creativity.

We encourage every child to experiment, take risks and discover that there is more than one way to be successful in art.

How We Teach Art

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that children build artistic knowledge and skills over time.

Across their time at Thringstone, children explore four key areas of art:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Art, Craft and Design Techniques

Each unit introduces new skills while revisiting and developing previous learning. Children investigate a range of materials, techniques and processes before creating their own artwork.

Alongside practical work, children study the work of influential artists, designers and craftspeople from a range of cultures and time periods. They learn about different artistic styles and use these as inspiration while developing their own ideas and creative voice.

Early Years

Creativity begins from the very start of school.

In Reception, children explore art through play, practical experiences and open-ended creative activities. They experiment with colour, texture, shape and different materials while developing imagination, fine motor skills and confidence in expressing themselves.

Art is woven throughout the Early Years curriculum, encouraging children to observe closely, explore creatively and talk about their ideas.

Developing Artistic Skills

As children move through the school, they become increasingly confident in using different media and techniques.

Children learn to:

  • develop observational drawing skills
  • experiment with colour, pattern, texture and form
  • work with a wide range of materials and tools
  • refine and improve their work through reflection
  • understand how artists communicate ideas, emotions and experiences.

Sketchbooks play an important role in children's artistic development, allowing them to record observations, practise techniques, develop ideas and reflect on their creative journey.

Celebrating Creativity

Art is celebrated throughout our school.

Children take pride in displaying their work in classrooms and around the school, creating an inspiring environment that reflects their creativity and achievements.

At the end of each unit, a piece of artwork from every class is selected for display in our Art Gallery, celebrating creativity, effort and artistic achievement across the school. Keep an eye on this page to see examples of the fantastic artwork our children produce.
