Thringstone Primary School

British Values

At Thringstone Primary School, we prepare children for life in modern Britain by helping them understand and live out the fundamental British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance.

These values are woven through our vision Believe and Achieve Together and our five school values - Belief, Kindness, Respect, Resilience and Teamwork. We don’t always expect children to memorise the British Values, but we do expect them to show them through their words, actions and choices every day.

Our aim is for every child to grow into a safe, caring, responsible and respectful individual who contributes positively to our school, our village and wider society.

How We Teach and Promote British Values

Teaching and learning about British Values is fully integrated into our PSHE curriculum, using the SCARF scheme. Lessons across the SCARF spiral curriculum help children understand themselves, others and the world around them through the themes of Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.

SCARF supports children’s spiritual, moral, social, cultural and emotional development, helping them to build respect for themselves and others. This naturally reinforces British Values through both explicit learning and everyday experiences in school.

Beyond PSHE, British Values are embedded across all aspects of school life - in assemblies, behaviour, leadership opportunities and community engagement.

Democracy
  • Children have a voice through our School Council and class discussions.

  • They vote for representatives and contribute ideas about how to make the school even better.

  • We encourage debate, respectful disagreement and shared decision-making.

  • Collective Worship and assemblies explore the meaning of fairness, equality and making choices together.

Rule of Law
  • Our school rules and behaviour systems are clear, consistent and fair.

  • Children learn why rules matter - to keep everyone safe, happy and respected.

  • Visits from the Police, Fire Service and other community groups reinforce the importance of laws in wider society.

  • Our behaviour approach promotes accountability and taking responsibility for actions.

Individual Liberty
  • Children are supported to make choices in a safe and nurturing environment.

  • They learn about rights, responsibilities and personal freedom through PSHE and online safety lessons.

  • We encourage self-belief and confidence to express opinions and make independent decisions.

  • Our anti-bullying culture and safeguarding systems ensure every child feels valued and protected.

Mutual Respect
  • Respect is one of our five core school values.

  • We expect kindness, politeness and good manners from everyone in the school community.

  • We celebrate differences and achievements in assemblies and class discussions.

  • Adults model respectful relationships, helping children to do the same.

Tolerance
  • We teach that everyone is different, and that’s something to celebrate.

  • Our curriculum and assemblies explore different faiths, cultures and beliefs.

  • We build understanding through RE lessons, cultural events and partnerships in the community.

  • Discrimination or prejudice of any kind is challenged directly and used as a learning opportunity.

In Summary

British Values at Thringstone Primary School are not just taught - they are lived. Through our values, curriculum and community links, we help every child to Believe and Achieve Together as respectful, responsible citizens ready for the wider world.
