Prevent Duty at Thringstone Primary School

At Thringstone Primary School, protecting children from radicalisation and extremism forms part of our wider safeguarding responsibility.

The Prevent Duty is a national safeguarding requirement for schools. It focuses on keeping children safe from being drawn into harmful ideologies, just as we protect them from other risks such as abuse, neglect or exploitation.

How we meet the Prevent Duty

We support children’s safety by:

• ensuring all staff receive safeguarding and Prevent training
• promoting respect, tolerance and understanding through our curriculum
• teaching children how to stay safe online
• encouraging children to speak to trusted adults about worries
• following safeguarding procedures and working with external agencies where necessary

Where appropriate, concerns may be referred through safeguarding channels including the Channel programme, which provides early support for individuals who may be vulnerable.

Prevent as part of safeguarding

Prevent is not separate from safeguarding at Thringstone. It forms part of the school’s overall child protection procedures, staff training and curriculum provision.

Any concerns are managed by the Designated Safeguarding Lead using the same safeguarding processes applied to all child protection matters.
