Thringstone Primary School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)

At Thringstone Primary School, children are at the heart of everything we do. Our PSHE curriculum helps them understand who they are, recognise what makes them unique and grow into confident individuals who value themselves and others.

We teach PSHE through the SCARF scheme (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship). This structured and progressive programme meets the national statutory guidance and supports our school values and curriculum drivers of Aspiration, Communication and Culture.

An overview of our PSHE and Relationships Education curriculum can be found at the bottom of this page.

Vision

At Thringstone, PSHE plays a vital role in preparing children for life beyond school. It helps them build the knowledge, skills and vocabulary to lead safe, healthy and happy lives, both now and in the future.

Through our curriculum, children learn to look after their physical and mental health, understand relationships and emotions, and make informed decisions about their wellbeing. They explore a wide range of beliefs, values and attitudes to gain a better understanding of themselves and the diverse society they live in.

We promote kindness, honesty and respect. Children are encouraged to reflect on their personal qualities, understand the impact of their choices and communicate their feelings with confidence.

Ultimately, we want them to believe in themselves, embrace who they are and approach the opportunities life offers with confidence and curiosity.

Relationships Education

Relationships Education is an important part of our PSHE curriculum and is taught in line with statutory requirements. It helps children understand what healthy, respectful and safe relationships look like — including friendships, family relationships and online interactions.

Our curriculum promotes equality and respect for all, reflecting the needs of our community and the values we share as a school. Parents and carers are consulted on our approach, and the full Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) Policy is available to view below:

Implementation

PSHE is taught weekly across all year groups through SCARF’s six key units:

  1. Me and My Relationships

  2. Valuing Difference

  3. Keeping Safe

  4. Rights and Respect

  5. Being My Best

  6. Growing and Changing

Lessons are practical, discussion-based and age-appropriate. Each unit builds on prior knowledge so that learning is revisited and deepened year on year. Teachers also use assemblies, themed days and real-life scenarios to make PSHE meaningful and relevant to children’s lives.

Subject Leadership

The PSHE curriculum is led by Mr Swales, Headteacher, who ensures the subject is delivered consistently and effectively across the school. Regular monitoring, training and review help maintain high standards and a strong link between PSHE, safeguarding and our wider school values.
