Music at Thringstone

Music is an important part of life at Thringstone Primary School. We believe every child should have the opportunity to sing, perform, create and appreciate music in a way that develops confidence, creativity and enjoyment.

Our Music curriculum reflects our curriculum drivers of Communication and Culture. Through singing, performing and listening, children learn to express themselves confidently while exploring music from different cultures, traditions and historical periods.

We teach music using the Leicestershire Music Scheme, which is based on the Model Music Curriculum and supports children in developing musical knowledge and skills progressively from Reception to Year 6.

How We Teach Music

Children take part in weekly music lessons that develop the key areas of musical learning:

  • Singing
  • Listening and Appraising
  • Performing
  • Composing
  • Playing Instruments

Learning is carefully sequenced so that children revisit and build upon previous knowledge, developing increasing confidence and musical understanding as they move through the school.

Alongside classroom lessons, children take part in weekly singing assemblies, helping to develop vocal technique, musicality and a shared love of singing. Daily singing also forms an important part of learning in Reception and our Skylarks provision.

Developing Musical Skills

Throughout their time at Thringstone, children experience a wide range of musical opportunities.

These include:

  • whole-class instrumental learning
  • composing and improvising
  • performing individually and as part of an ensemble
  • exploring music from different genres and cultures
  • developing rhythm, pitch and notation.

Year 3 children take part in whole-class ukulele lessons, while older children enjoy innovative experiences such as turntablism, introducing them to modern forms of music-making and collaborative performance.

Music Beyond the Classroom

Music is woven throughout school life.

Children have opportunities to join lunchtime music clubs, receive instrumental tuition and perform throughout the year. Performances include Christmas productions, class assemblies, concerts, collaborative festivals, church services, visits to local care homes and end-of-year celebrations.

We work closely with Leicestershire Music and our local partnership schools to provide children with opportunities to perform alongside others and experience music beyond the classroom.

Each morning, children also listen to carefully selected music from a wide range of genres, broadening their musical knowledge and appreciation.

Celebrating Music

We are proud to have been awarded the Music Mark in recognition of our commitment to high-quality music education and ensuring every child has the opportunity to experience the benefits of making music.
