Starting School at Thringstone

Starting school is a big step for children and families. It’s completely normal to feel excited, a little nervous and to have lots of questions. At Thringstone Primary School, we take time to make sure every child feels safe, welcomed and ready from the very start.

Most children settle very quickly once they begin. Our staff are experienced in supporting children through those first days, and we work closely with families so that everyone feels confident and supported.

How we support your child’s transition
Children joining from Little Acorns

Children moving up from Little Acorns already feel part of the school community. They know the building, the playground and many of the adults, which helps September feel familiar rather than new.

Throughout the year, staff work closely together and children spend time visiting the Reception classroom, meeting their teacher and getting used to routines before their first day.

Children joining from another setting

If your child attends a different pre-school, nursery or childminder, we arrange visits wherever possible. This helps us get to know your child properly, what they enjoy, what helps them feel comfortable and anything that will support them to settle confidently.

Families are also invited into school so children can explore their new classroom, meet staff and begin to feel at home.

Helping your child feel ready

There is no perfect checklist for starting school and every child develops at their own pace.

Simple everyday routines can help build confidence, such as:

  • putting on their coat

  • using the toilet independently

  • recognising their name

  • practising listening and taking turns

Children do not need to be able to do everything before they start school. That is what we are here for.
