Starting School at Thringstone
Starting school is a special milestone for every family. It's a time of excitement, new experiences and, quite naturally, a few worries too. At Thringstone Primary School, we take time to ensure every child feels happy, safe and ready to begin their learning journey with confidence.
We know that children settle best when school and home work together. That's why we build strong relationships with families from the very beginning, making sure everyone feels supported before the first day arrives.
How we support your child’s transition
Every child's journey into Reception is different, but our aim is always the same: to help children feel that they belong from the moment they walk through our doors.
Children joining from Little Acorns
Children moving up from Little Acorns already know many of the adults, routines and learning environment, helping them make a confident start in Reception.
Throughout the year, children spend time visiting the Reception classroom, getting to know their teacher and becoming familiar with daily routines before September.
Children joining from another setting
We work closely with local pre-schools, nurseries and childminders to get to know every child before they start school.
Where possible, we visit children in their current setting and invite families into school so children can explore their new classroom, meet staff and begin to feel at home.
Helping your child feel ready
There is no perfect checklist for starting school. Every child develops at their own pace, and we will support them every step of the way.
Simple everyday experiences can help children grow in confidence before they start school, including:
- Putting on their own coat.
- Using the toilet independently.
- Recognising their name.
- Listening to stories.
- Taking turns and sharing with others.
Most importantly, encourage your child to talk, play, explore and enjoy being a child. We will help them develop the rest.
